KICKSTARTER What is Kickstarter?

Kickstarter is a launchpad for creators to raise funds for the initial production of their invention. Backers (that’s you!) can support the creator by pre-ordering the product at a discounted price.

KICKSTARTER What does it mean to back a project (pledge)?

When you back a project, you’re pre-ordering the product. That means you’ll get it once it’s produced.

Besides getting the product itself, you’re also joining a community! You get inside details on how the product comes to life, take part in important surveys and give the creator valuable feedback.

In order to pledge, click that green button that says “Back this project”. You’ll get to select your shipping country and choose your desired pledge level and reward.

KICKSTARTER When is my money collected?

Your money will be collected only after the project ends on May 28, 2025. If the project is cancelled for any reason, you won’t be charged.

Shipping costs will be charged separately when we prepare to fulfill your order.

KICKSTARTER What payment methods can I use?

You can use any debit or credit card associated with Visa, Mastercard or American Express, as well as Discover and JCB cards. Kickstarter does not accept payments with PayPal.

LOGISTICS How does shipping work?

Shipping will be charged when we are about to ship (so that money is not collected when you back the project). We will be shipping from the US, and the cost of shipping varies based on how far you are from our fulfillment center. Shipping rates will be competitive. Any tariff impacts would be assessed separately (see separate FAQ).

LOGISTICS Will tariffs impact price?

Tariffs will not impact the unit price; the prices that you see on our campaign page are the same ones we had loaded before tariffs were increased.

Meanwhile, we are adapting to ensure timely delivery and cost transparency. Like many Kickstarter projects launching these days, we may need to charge an additional tariff fee along with the standard shipping costs, however that fee will be capped at $20 per unit for Nocturne backers, even if tariff-related costs* are much higher.

In addition, we will share the tariff cost with you 50/50 up to that point. For example, if tariff costs are $18/unit, you would pay $9 and Nocturne would pay $9. If tariff costs are $60/unit, you would pay $20 and Nocturne would pay $40.

This cost-sharing approach makes sure you are not surprised with a massive extra fee, and incentivizes us to proactively manage costs.

To that end, our supplier has manufacturing sites in China, Korea, and the US, and we have the flexibility to choose which location makes the most overall sense right before we start production, which greatly reduces the risk that we choose something unnecessarily expensive. Our longest material lead time is 14 weeks, so we have about three months before we need to make a decision on manufacturing location.

*For clarity, when we say “tariff costs” here, this refers to A) actual tariff expenses and/or B) higher costs due to manufacturing in a more expensive location.

LOGISTICS Do you offer a warranty?

We have a one-year workmanship warranty. Reach out to us if your unit is defective and we will do our best to get you a replacement as quickly as possible.

LOGISTICS What is your return policy?

We do not offer refunds or returns on items received as a Kickstarter reward.

Because Kickstarter is not an online store, and the pledges received are being used directly to fund our first major production run, we do not offer refunds on pledges. We are grateful for every backer who supports us through Kickstarter, and we are doing our absolute best to try and make the best product possible. If you are unhappy with your reward, don’t hesitate to reach out to us, and we will see if there is anything we can do based on the circumstances.

Backing a Kickstarter campaign is not quite the same as buying a product outright. Kickstarter is a community crowdfunding platform where backers support creators in exchange for rewards (and those rewards are offered at significant discounts). The support we get from Kickstarter backers enables us to make Nocturne a reality, get our business off the ground, and gather customer feedback.

LOGISTICS When will you send fulfillment surveys and what is the purpose of them?

When you back this project, you choose a reward level, then enter your credit card info, and that’s it. You don’t provide a shipping address. Instead, you will enter that information in our fulfillment survey. We plan to send out fulfillment surveys shortly after the campaign ends.

PRODUCT Can I hang Nocturne on the wall without putting screws in the wall?

Many double-sided tapes are capable of holding loads much heavier than Nocturne, (which is 1.9lbs). Check the tape packaging to understand the load it can handle as well as the amount of tape needed to handle that load.

PRODUCT Can I change the sounds on Nocturne?

Nocturne’s sounds are loaded at the factory and cannot be changed after that. This is necessary to avoid having to connect Nocturne to an app.

That said, the five sounds provide quite a range, and each sound can be further adjusted using the equalizer. So even though the overall number of sounds is low, the degree to which you can customize each one is high.

PRODUCT Why pink noise instead of white noise? I thought white noise was the flattest?

Both pink and white noise can claim status as the “flattest” noise, but in different ways. Pink noise is our default noise because it is the “flattest” in terms of how it sounds; every octave has equal energy. This gives you a clean slate from which to start making adjustments.

White noise is flattest in terms of energy per frequency. However, this definition of flat actually sounds higher pitched to the human ear.

The exciting thing is: you can use Nocturne’s equalizer to create any color of noise!

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
